The changing climate is posing serious risks to ecosystems and human well-being. Global temperatures have risen by about 1.1°C above pre-industrial levels, and further warming is inevitable. This warming is causing melting of glaciers and ice sheets, sea level rise, more frequent and intense extreme weather events, shifts in precipitation patterns, and many other changes to the Earth's physical systems. These changes are impacting natural habitats, agricultural productivity, human health, and economic activities in profound ways.

Forests, coral reefs, and other ecosystems are being degraded or destroyed by a combination of climate change and other human-caused stresses. Many species are being pushed towards extinction as their habitats become unsuitable. Food and water supplies are being disrupted, leading to increased hunger, malnutrition, and conflicts. Deadly heat waves, droughts, floods, and storms are becoming more common, causing loss of life and enormous economic damages.

The people and communities that are least responsible for climate change - such as small island nations, Indigenous Peoples, and the global poor - are often the ones being hit the hardest by its impacts. Climate change is thus exacerbating existing inequalities and posing serious threats to human rights and justice.

The good news is that we have the knowledge and technology to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build resilience to climate impacts. Transitioning to clean energy, protecting and restoring natural ecosystems, and adopting sustainable agricultural practices can all play a major role. But we need rapid and coordinated action at all levels of society to avoid the worst-case scenarios.

Time is running out, but there is still a window of opportunity to avoid the most catastrophic consequences of climate change. By coming together as a global community and taking bold, equitable, and immediate action, we can build a more sustainable and resilient future for all.
